IML presents in IBC2019 IP showcase theater(Hall.10 E106) on Saturday 14. Sept. about the VC-2 compression based ST2110 workflow design.

A case studty of the development and test for a IP-enabled workflow of a broadcasting studio is presented.
In the development, the following rules are followed to build a future IP studio design.
The first is to use open standards as SMPTE ST2110/ST2042, NMOS for interoperability with standard devices.
The second is to use COTS network equipment that support OpenFlow for SDN capability or legacy multicast IGMP.
The third is to use NMOS protocol for workflow management and device control.
The fourth is to use ST2059 time synchronization but this is not mendatory for all devices.

We used 10G/40G/25G/100G SDN capable ethernet switches to build a spine-leaf structure for the network infrastructure. Parts of the whole network were build with legacy 10G switch with multicast IGMPv2 support. We could successfully build a fully monitored SDN network for IP studio development.

For the transmission of 4K video, SMPTE ST2110-20 is used for uncompressed video and SMPTE ST2042 VC2 codec is used for compressed video. Both standards are implemented in a single workflow and managed with NMOS manager. For ST2042 VC2 compressed video, we adopted SMPTE ST2110-22 RTP protocol.

For the audio transmission, two methods are implemented to send and receive multichannel audio. 12G-SDI ingested data from camera has multi-channel audio in the SDI data stream, for which we packetized the audio ancilliary packets directly and sent on the RTP packet. This is not a SMPTE ST2110-30 standard, but we could send and receive 16 channels audio with least latency. For 2 channels of audio, we also developed SMPTE ST2110-30 sender & receiver IP.

The video and audio senders did not used ST2059 time synchrization and the receivers recoverd senders frequency and phase for reconstruction of the original video and audio data stream. By this method, we could minimize the multi-step transmission delay and the video switcher and storage encoder used the ST2059 synchronized time information.

We could run test real-time studio successfully with video & audio acquisition, CG overlay, multi-ME switcher, video server storage.
